The charm of antique doll quilts

I am doing a little reorganizing today as I am getting some new furniture delivered monday.  This required the moving of a small quilt cupboard during which I came across two little quilts to share.  The first is indigo and white hour-glass.  The size is 14"x19".  The stitching leads me to believe that it might have been made by a young girl who was learning to sew.  Two black and white shirting are used, along with two indigo polka dot prints.  There are a few lighter blue triangles in the sawtooth border. Throwing in a few different prints like this can give you a more antique-y look when you make a quilt.  I reproduced this quilt several years ago in both blue and white and red and white.

This is a little 16-patch tied doll quilt.  It measures 15"x15".  Again this was probably made by a young girl.  The imperfection is what I find so charming about antique doll quilts.  I haven't reproduced this one yet but I feel inspired to give it a try  Both of these little gems date to the late 19th or early 20th century..

  2. Lovely quilts! I would have thought children would have learned to sew on bigger pieces rather than lots of tiny little squares and triangles that even I have trouble managing. Maybe I'm just a klutz.
