Where were you in 1976?

I am bringing up 1976 because of what I found last night.  While waiting for my sons' band to start playing at a "First Friday"  celebration in a nearby town, I wandered into a thrift shop.  I found this fabric from the 1976, obviously made for the big bicentennial celebration that year.  The two yard piece cost me $1.62 including tax; I wonder what it cost new in 1976?  I bought the fabric not necessarily to make it into anything, but because it made me feel a little nostalgic.  The bicentennial would have been the summer before my senior year of high school.  I don't remember too much specific about the bincentennial celebration except that it was a really big deal and our town had bigger than normal fireworks.  I do remember the class of 1976 were the best ever class in the history of the universe, and our class of 1977 just couldn't measure up.  What do you remember from 1976?

  4. Wow, 1976 I was 26, my daughter was 6, my husband at the time had just finished college and we moved from central Illinois to Sioux Falls, SD. The move was a bit hard for me since my Mom and Dad, my sisters,my brother and all my friends were still in Illinois. That was the first of several moves and I learned to adapt and enjoy it.

  5. Wow, that was the year I graduated high school. I was a Starstepper on the Truman High drill team and I worked a summer job at Missouri Town 1855 where I got to demonstrate my quilt making skill and learned to weave. I LOVE that fabric! Karmen

  9. 1976? I can't think of a single thing of importance in my life that year, other than being the mother of two sons, age 13 and 11; no births, deaths, weddings, divorces, moves, graduations, or even special celebrations! I can't believe it! That must be the only year of my life with no life-shaking experience, either good or bad! I think I may have a Fort Worth Star Telegram edition from July 4, 1976, stored away in a cedar chest, for whatever that's worth, but I'm not sure. Is that boring, or what? Apparently it was not a very exciting year for me; I still can't believe it! ---"Love"

  10. I remember my friend was visiting from Paris. My sister lived on a hill high above a lake. An friend sold illegal fireworks. They somehow ended up at my sister's when they heard a rumor their business was to be raided. That fireworks display was awesome. When the last one went off all we could hear was everyone around the lake cheering and honking their horns in approval. They yard looked like a war zone afterward. We had to explain to our Parisian friend this is not normal.

  11. I, too, am the HS class of 1977 and know exactly what you mean. Except for a few very close friends, I preferred the class of 1976. I had a ball during the July 4 1976 celebration. I spent it at my sister's in Ridgefield, CT where they had several days of Revolutionary re-enactments and a Colonial ball. Made my own colonial reproduction dress. I have to say, that summer in CT is what got me interested in antique and reproduction quilts since that is when I first saw the Keeler Tavern quilt. Thanks for the memories!

  12. I will never forget 1976. My Aunt and Uncle had moved to Las Vegas and so that summer, my mother, myself and my 9 year old son drove from Chicago to visit them. We then drove to Los Angeles on and was in Disney Land on the 4th and saw the most fabulous fireworks.

    Thanks for the memories. I
