We started our day meeting at the headquarters of the historical society in Flemington, NJ. Except for getting a little confused in one of NJ infamous traffic circles, it was an easy drive from PA. The museum and small garden in the back were beautiful. Here are some photos.
We then took a short drive to the society's archive building. It looks like a barn on the outside from its shape and red color, but inside it is a state-of-the-art storage faciily with climate control and moveable shelving. Pretty cool. We viewed about 40 quilts and coverlets, studying the design, fabrics and quilting. All the items were of local origin. The ranged from as early as 1840 to 1930. My favorite was a contained shoo-fly. I am going to try to look it up on the Quilt Index (the number is 4A-7F-D3A). I haven't done this before so I'll let you know if I find a picture of it.
All in all, a fun and educational day.
Sounds like a great way to spend the day! Your pictures of the museum are great, thanks for sharing your day.
ReplyDeleteI need to take time to enjoy some similar places around here! I love the "Remember Me" piece, the doll and puffed sleeved piece on the bed! Thank for sharing. ---"Love"
ReplyDeleteglad you had a fun day!
ReplyDeletewish I could have been there had another commitment that day unfortunately.

What a neat way to spend your day!
ReplyDeleteInteresting trip and posting. Thanks. Doing a quick search, there are 18 records in the Quilt Index with the words "Hunterdon County Historical" in them (not necessarily together or in that order). I"ll try to post a link here to that query:
ReplyDeleteOops, it did not let me post the link. If you go to the Quilt Index and enter in the upper right search box the words Hunterdon County Historical, you should get 18 records. If you do that I'll be interested if the records are for any of the quilts or coverlets that you saw. Thanks again for your interesting post.
ReplyDeleteYes, to Justine's comment. I remember seeing most of those 18 items you found in your search. We saw many others.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful day! Lovely photos...XO
ReplyDeleteAnn, I had to laugh when you mentioned your experience on the traffic circle! I'm originally from NJ and when I was a new driver I got stuck going round and round on a circle on Route 23 in Wayne, NJ. I was so flustered and didn't know how to exit the circle without getting hit by cars entering the circle - whew! NJ roads are not for the faint-hearted! Have a blessed day!
